Code Clubs are FREE volunteer-led clubs for 8 to 12 year olds, held in schools, libraries, and community centres typically, weekly, after school. Kids have fun learning to create games, animations, and websites.
Calling librarians, senior students, and parents
Running a code club and seeing the light bulbs come on as children have fun coding is a really rewarding activity – it’ll make you remember why you love coding yourself!
One child has learned great resilience through coding. His emotional growth has been exponential, as coding is something he enjoys enough to try repeatedly. He has transferred his feelings of success from perseverance to other areas of his life, and has really grown.
One of the young girls attending this session of Code Club at our branch spent the first day in tears because she didn’t understand anything about coding and felt like she couldn’t do it. Yesterday she happily and confidently coded a player versus player game.
I participated in the Social Innovation Lab as a speaker talking about entrepreneurship. I was struck by how engaged the youth was, asking excellent questions, and showing a strong commitment to attack social challenges head on with entrepreneurial solutions. I left feeling inspired by the youth I met at the Lab.
The Lab opened a whole new world for me! I realized we all have a place in science and tech, and more than wanting to make positive change, I feel empowered with the skills to actually do it. A year later, I still see the friends I made regularly and have had the chance to grow by returning to the Lab as an instructor and speaking at a UNESCO youth panel in Paris.
It was an amazing experience. It opened my eyes to so many possibilities of career options I didn't even know existed!
